Hi y’all! I’m Nicole from Writes Like A Girl where I blog about personal style, body positivity, and Sisterhood. I’m so excited that Rachel asked me to guest on her blog while she’s on vacay (hello, jealous!) because I’m a longtime fan! From her real outfits to her Austin adventures, Rachel is the kind of girl you want to hang out with, and reading her blog feels like basically the same!
I think the first thing Rachel and I bonded over is our love of Austin. I graduated from a small liberal arts school which is located on a dormant volcano in South Austin. Going to school right on South Congress meant that I was just a short bus ride away from one of the hottest tourist spots in Austin that is equally loved by locals.
One of my absolute favorite stops along SoCo is Big Top Candy Shop where you can find the best assortment of saltwater taffy, all the old school candy you can imagine, and classic handmade sodas. When I was in college, I even applied to be a soda jerk! After all the years of visiting the candy shop around the corner, I still had never tried one of their most popular treats: cucumber soda. I know, it sounds pretty weird, but I decided to be brave for Rachel and give it a try in honor of this guest post!
Well, I have to report that the soda is my new favorite beverage in Austin. The soda — made with real cucumber juice — is a deep kelly green color and comes topped with a maraschino cherry and a tart gummy. I was so surprised to find that it actually tastes a lot like watermelon, so it was a perfect marriage of sweet and refreshing.

Next time you’re in Austin, I highly recommend stopping by Big Top for a bag of saltwater taffy and a cucumber soda. You should probably invite me and Rachel too, because how fun would that be? Follow along on my Instagram and blog to see more outfits and outings in Austin. Thanks again to Rachel for having me!
